Shinola Journal: Luxury Journal Review

January 5, 2022

If you don’t already know, Shinola is an american luxury goods brand designed and manufactured in Detroit, Michigan. Established in 2011 they’ve made a name for themselves with their flagship product line of meticulously handmade watches but their stationary line is nothing to scoff at. The Shinola Journal has become one of my must have accessories over the years.

I typically talk about bullet journaling here, and surprisingly Shinola hasn’t dipped their toe into that product yet. So for this review I’ll be referencing Shinola’s Medium Hard Linen Journal with ruled pages. I use this one for more traditional journaling and mindfulness. It has become my go to in terms of jotting down quick notes or lengthy reflections.

Durability

The product is very durable. I take this journal in and out my bag daily. Pages have never come loose. The brand uses smyth-sewn technique to secure the pages but also ensure the pages lie flat, which is a great feature. The binding technique has become synonymous with durability and quality. You don’t have to deal with breaking this journal in and having a crease on the pages. It’s size is comfortable in the hand for casual use.

Ghosting

An important measure for any journal. While the pages in the Shinola Journal aren’t as thick in comparison to some journals meant specifically for bullet journaling and mixed media, the Shinola Journal performs well for multiple pen types.

Details

The journal is beautifully crafted so it’s perfect for a gift. (Who doesn’t like notebooks?? everyone uses notebooks) But on top of it being a beautiful product Shinola offers free embossing. So you can personalize the journal with the initials of your giftee.

Gold Letter Embossing

It’s that something extra to show your giftee you care. Also Shinola is incredibly accommodating. My parents gave me 4 names and thus 4 initials. The website wouldn’t accept anything over 3 characters, but I was able to call up my local store and they were able to accomodate me no problem and with no extra charge.

The Journal comes with a few standard details I’ve pictured below. A back pocket, an elastic close, and an embossed Shinola logo.

The X Factor

Sorry to generalize here but like most millenials I’m a sucker for a good brand story and Shinola probably has one of the best. Their flagship product are watches but their stationary has really made a name for itset. The product is manufactured in Detroit, Michigan and they pride themselves in hiring from the local community and providing full time work with benefits to their employees. Often their limited edition time pieces will have proceedes dedicated to a local non-profit.
