The Ember Mug marketed is as “The World’s First Temperature Control Mug” Smart home accessories are everywhere. It was only a matter of time before the quaint coffee mug was outfitted with Bluetooth to be connected with our smartphone. I’ve had my Ember mug for more than a month now so I feel confident in giving an honest review. (This is not a sponsored post btw)
I got the Ember Mug²model mug in black . It comes with mug itself, and the hot plate. First impressions are it’s sleek. It does feel bottom heavy, as the heating element is at the bottom of the cup. Not a dealbreaker by any means – but definitely a different sensory experience in comparison to a standard mug.
The App
Ember has its own stand and alone app where you can control the temperature settings of the mug. It’s intuitive and easy to use and I had no issue connecting the mug. I will say after using the Ember Mug for a month I’ve only opened the app maybe 3 times. The preset temperatures are….fine. I’m sure there is a coffee equivalent of a sommelier who would beg to differ but for someone who’s a casual or slightly above casual drinker your coffee will be hot using this mug, which all we want right? I usually only drink coffee. If you drink coffee along with various teas you would prefer to be served at different temperatures, this mug would work for you. But for me I found the temperature settings to be more of a novelty than something I really used regularly.
Performance
On to performance….the mug performs great. There is a weird sense of joy coming back to a mug two hours after your brewed it and it’s still hot. The first couple of days I would absentmindedly take a few sips between meetings and be pleasantly surprised my coffee was still hot. During this first month of having my Ember mug I’ve found I actually drink cups faster. I think it is just an overall more pleasurable experience than a standard ceramic mug. Having your coffee at a specific temperature the entire time means your last sip is going to be just an enjoyable as your last. .
Battery life the ember mug last 1.5 hours keeping your hot drink hot. I keep my charging plate at my desk and set the mug down on the plate between sips so battery life isn’t a big consideration for me. The battery life would be more important on the Traveling Ember Mug but for me with the standard style it wasn’t a big consideration.
Is the Ember Mug worth it?
These mugs cost a pretty penny starting at $99 and going up to $179 for the travel mug. So if you’re going to buy this mug you should be certain. If you are not an everyday hot beverage drinker….don’t waste your money on this mug. Yes it’s the smart features are cool, but unless you’re really going to use this mug e.v.e.r.y.d.a.y it’s not going to be worth it. With that said, if you are an everyday drinker or you want to get this as a gift to someone who is, the temperature settings are excellent and there is an intrinsic value to your last sip tasting as good as your first.
