For a while it was considered that cacti were the “easy” plants because you never had to water them….but if you’re like me I have a tendency to love your plants to death ( aka overwatering) maybe you just want something that is a bit more forgiving. What I’ve found to be the “easiest” plants are plants that can be put on a schedule and thrive. No humidity checks or light monitors here, just no fuss green goddesses. Plant care has become a really wonderful part of my weekly routine has become a Sunday ritual that gets me ready for the week. But even if you get off your schedule a few days or forget a week the plants I’ve listed here won’t throw a tantrum and will be perfectly fine when you do get back to your schedule. And unsurprisingly a little greenery indoors has been shown to be healthy and even increase productivity.
1. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
The first plant on the list is the ZZ plant. You can find this plant at most big box stores and even some online nurseries. It’s a no frills plant but is beautiful in its simplicity. It’s known to thrive in indoor settings and is known for being specifically adept at removing toxins from the air. (Check out the NASA study here) All that fresh air is sure to up your productivity!
2. Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata)
This plant has exploded in popularity over the past few years and for good reason. It’s sleek in appearance and hardy in an indoor environment. It does well in low light. If you lean towards forgetting to water this would be a great plant for you because it can go up to six weeks without being watered.
3. Neon Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
If you’re into vine growing plants, and are looking for a plant that will cascade down your bookcase look no further. The Neon Pothos fits the bill. It’s heart shaped leaves are so charming and its bright green coloring is the perfect pop of color for a drab zoom background. These are fast and easy growers so you’ll feel like an accomplished botanist with this one.
4. Red Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura red)
So maybe you’ve have the above plants in your collection and you want to try something new or maybe you’re looking for the next level of plant parenting. The Red Pray Plant would be the plant for you. It’s beautiful and getting to see it “pray” everyday is so enjoyable. When I originally got this plant I took a risk because I thought I’d kill it but here we are a year later and it’s double the size and thriving. One thing about this plant is that it’s best to use filtered water and place it in a sunny room. Otherwise it doesn’t complain and happily puts out the signature spiraled leaves of prayer plants. Week after week. This easy plant can lean towards being expensive so it’s better bought after you’ve kept some of the more basic varieties of house plants alive but it’s always good to have a reward plant.
5. Faux Plant
As Sweet Brown said- “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”. Listen, maybe you don’t want to deal with the watering schedule or the lightning situation…maybe your home office doesn’t even have windows. Maybe your last plant got bugs and you’ve been burned. That okay and it doesn’t mean you can have some greenery in your space to give the illusion. Faux plants have improved so much in quality over the years and most of the trendy house plants come in faux varieties now. This blog is for those working from home and I’d be shocked if anyone 1. cared you had a faux plant instead of a real one 2. could spot a fake plant through a VC. If you don’t want the hassle but want the look there’s no shame in getting a faux variety.
